While we at Deckmasters may be a bit “old school” and prefer the look and qualities of real redwood or cedar boards, we recognize the popularity and “maintenance free” nature of Trex and other brands of composite decking. These vinyl composite decking systems were initially touted as “maintenance free” by their manufacturers, but this description has now been revised to “low maintenance” since regular cleaning is required to keep a Trex or composite deck looking as good as possible.

Advantages of Composite Decking Systems

Trex and other brands of composite decking have the advantages of requiring less maintenance than a traditional wood deck. No sealing or sanding is required—or even possible—with a composite deck. Since the material is basically plastic and has no actual grain other than what is pre-formed onto the boards, the boards will not splinter, rot, or be damaged by termites. Composite decking is available in a variety of colors, tints, and textures, providing the homeowner with many possibilities. Each year, the manufacturers of composite decking and installation systems market new decking options to consumers. Some composite decking systems are now engineered so as not to require screws on the surface of the deck and install with relative ease.

Disadvantages of Composite Decking

Disadvantages of Trex or composite decking actually the same as some of the advantages—once you factor in time. When new, the latest versions of the product provide an attractive finish and look much like real wood, but over time the decking can fade and become scratched—just like real wood. Unfortunately, a composite deck cannot be refinished—even by Deckmasters! There isn’t a way to attractively stain or tint a vinyl deck, and even if you did, you would have trouble sanding without damaging the “wood grain” texture when a new coat of finish is required. As a composite decking installation job ages, there is little one can do besides regular cleaning to keep it looking nice. Also, some of the recommended cleaners can leave the boards with a “powdery” finish.
